Description

Peggy and Pam were two desperately disorganized sisters. They started each day with the best of intentions, but they never made it because they were “Sidetracked Home Executives” caught in the disorder of misplaced priorities, half-completed chores, and undirected energies – two smart ladies who’d never used their heads when coping with their homes.

So, they analyzed their lives and set up a rotating card system that scheduled their chores on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. With a combination of the sympathy of a fellow former slob, and the firm resolution of a for-your-own-good mother, they tell listeners how they too can get organized.

    Great plan
My sister came across this books many years ago when our children were little. It was a life saver as it was really hard to keep up with everything with toddlers around. So many times you think of I only have about 15 minutes until I have to leave, start dinner, or what ever it might be and nothing gets done. In the book you have chores to be done daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly and each one is timed as you do it the first time. Then you know exactly how long it takes to do a chore and which one you can quickly do in that 15 minutes. The house pretty much always stays clean when you follow your daily routine because instead of letting everything go until your one big cleaning day you are doing small easily done cleaning daily. Your children can also be taught to do chores that are age appropriate. One rule I had was that they get out one toy to play with and then put it away before getting out another which made a huge difference in how my house looked. It also ingrained in them at an early age to put things away when they were done with them so they could find them when they wanted them. Rather than index cards I made a little chore chart for them. So, when I was dusting the furniture in the room their job would be to dust the baseboards. With having a system you can have a clean house and still be able to spontaneously do other things like lunch with a friend.

Hope to see a Kindle edition soon!
I own 2 or 3 copies of this book (don’t ask) but they were worth every penny. Pam and Peggy are funny, thoughtful, sympathetic, and most of all, brilliant at helping “the rest of us” get and stay organized. I’ve owned several books (and a handful of self-hypnosis tapes) that considered time management, self-discipline and self-esteem the hallmarks of good organization. Believe me, your self-esteem will go through the roof when you realize those left-brain systems are the real root of your problem.I tend to be tactile, spontaneous, creative, oblivious to time, and either hyper-focused (on some project) or totally unfocused (and unaware of my surroundings). If you have any of these characteristics, the Sidetracked Home Executive (SHE) program is for you. It supports your weaknesses so you can actually be disciplined and manage your time well. Best of all, it celebrates your strengths and makes you glad you weren’t born an accountant. The index card box (the basis of this system) is a bear to organize that first week, but if you focus on making everything “pretty” (like a fashion accessory), the process will be much easier. SHE is the ONLY system that has ever kept my life clean, ordered and simple for an extended period of time. Right now, I’m decluttering my tremendous book collection. Pam… Peggy… please roundup the kids and ask them to help you publish this beloved text on Kindle. I promise to keep at least one hard copy until you do. Many thanks for the help you’ve given me through… well… too many years to count.

    Helping keep me sane!
I just love this book! I have been using this system for 2 weeks now, and already I notice a change in my life. I am more relaxed, more organized and can focus on the things I WANT to do. Much of the book is funny accounts of the author’s battles with clutter and disorganization. This is entertaining, but I wanted to get right to the heart of things. I am using their 3 x 5 index card plan. Basically, they want you to put all the chores that need to be done on index cards, filed with different colors according to how often they need to be done (daily, weekly, monthly, seasonally). You file the cards behind the appropriate date in an index card box. Each day, you just need to look at the cards to see what you need to do. I find it very helpful in that I get busy right away on what needs to be done and don’t worry about other chores, because I have them scheduled for another day. The book has a chart at the back suggesting various household chores that need to be done, and places for you to add your own. Before using this system, I often felt overwhelmed just thinking about all the things that needed to be done, and ended up not doing anything at all! It really helps me to focus on what needs to be done and avoid wasting time. Now I have more time to do the things that I want, and I am happier and better organized. It is an easy system to apply and can be adapted to the areas where you are more or less organized. I highly recommend this book!

Still one of the best ways to reduce clutter… and guilt
When I bought the original version of this book, back when it first came out, my three children were very young and our house was a mess. Worse, I kept falling behind on cleaning, and that left me feeling guilty. And then I’d lie in bed at night, feeling like a Very Bad Wife And Mother. This book changed all that. Oh, the house was still a mess at times, but at least I knew is was clean, and I knew that if the living room wasn’t tidy on Monday, it would be on Thursday… or whatever my designated “tidy up” day was for that room. The Sidetracked Sisters speak compassionately and with humor. They share a system that’s very satisfying with its low-tech approach. And best of all, it not only works, it pretty much eliminates guilt. If I didn’t tidy the living room one Thursday, I knew I’d do that the next Thursday. In other words, I stopped having that long to-do list in my head, and felt as if I was pretty much on top of everything. And I was.So, now that I’m a grandmother and I heard my daughter talk about the clutter in her house, and how she needed to clean but it was overwhelming… well, I bought her this updated edition of the book.I’ve tried lots of systems, from FlyLady through digital reminders, and so on. I keep going back to the Sidetracked Sisters’ cards, and they still work better than anything else I’ve found. This book earns at least five stars for its value. And, oh yes, this week I was too busy to vacuum on Monday. I don’t feel a moment’s remorse, because I know I’ll vacuum on Thursday… no guilt in the interim. So, even now, when it’s just my husband and me at home, this book remains essential to our clean (and relatively uncluttered) home… and my sanity. lol

Danke Pam, danke Peggy! Danke, danke, danke!

Many years ago I bought the book Getting Your Act Together written by the Slob Sisters and the introduction had my name on it and really resonated with me and gave me hope. I implemented the system and I became very successful at being able to purge without sentimentality preventing me from moving forward it also allowed me to complete my chores and having a clean house that I was able to invite people without the awful “stash and stuff” panic moments whenever there was company coming. I have maintained this skill of purging and organizing drawers and closets and the pleasure of easily finding the things I needed, since my first implementation. As time went by I used the system less and less and allowed myself to be caught up in my career (In retrospect I should have used this system to structure my work days to cut way back on my stress levels and to increase my joy doing what I loved).I recently had an “aha” moment in midst of my struggle to organize myself, open mail, get bills paid, run errands, searching through piles of paper, allowing visitors, etc. I remembered the system and purchased the same book I had purchased those many, many years ago (’90s). As I was reading it there was reference made to another book the sisters had written. I went to the Amazon site, completed a search and found this book. I was thrilled to see an updated version published in 2016. It has the system revised with more categories and ready-made exemplars in the Appendix. It was a joy to read and gave me the impression of catching up with old friends. Once again I have the tools to start the system. I am excited to begin getting organized once more and getting rid of that anxious feeling in the pit of my stomach. It made my life so freeing in the past and I anticipate that it will do so again. I suggest this book to everyone who is looking at uncomplicating their lives and reducing their stress levels. This is the best book of its kind that I have read. Life-changing.

OK, I bought this thinking it was UNLIKELY to work. However, it has been really helpful!! As a full-time working mum of 4 (my ‘baby’ is nearly 15!), I am a definite Side Tracked Home Executive! In fact, I should be tidying up the study right now!I have taken a lot on board and have put quite a bit of the planning in place. I have actually done and enjoyed some housework – I just need a lie down in a darkened room for a bit now!!I love the fact that the writers’ homes were very much like mine usually is BEFORE they sorted themselves out. I don’t have the time they suggest for doing the whole house, but I have 4 children and a husband who could be trained up to help!It will take time to get straight, but I am reasonably confident that after the summer holidays (I am a teacher) I could have people call round unannounced and actually LET THEM IN TO THE HOUSE!!!!!!!! They may even be able to SIT ON A SOFA IN THE LIVING ROOM!!!
