They are meant to be used in conjunction with Dr. Kabat-Zinn’s book, Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain and Illness. Thousands of people have used these programs either alone or in conjunction with the book to develop and sustain a meditation practice based on mindfulness and to benefit from its stress reducing, healing, and transformational potential when practiced regularly.

    Want to get healthy? Do this!!
    What I like the best about this CD series is the peacefulness and better health that I now have.My sister is a clinical psychologist and told me that this Mindfulness CD from the Univ. of Mass. Stress Clinic is excellent for those who need to de-stress, to be much healthier, to be more flexible emotionally and physically, to be stronger, to learn to calm oneself, to breathe to relax and much more. It is the best thing I have EVER done for myself. I do it 6 days a week (at home) now. I went through the whole suggested program. My fav is CD 2 which is 40 mins of yoga. Therapeutic yoga. And I also do the breathing exercises. The body scan is really good, too! I had become allergic to all blood pressure meds this past year, so I needed a way to be able to tone things down so my bp would not rise. This has really helped. Be sure to get a thick mat even if you are doing the yoga on a rug. I have a half-inch mat which I got from Amazon, too. I also have the accompanying book on catastrophic living… it goes with the Cds… If you do this, you will be doing yourself a wonderful favor. I am no spring chicken… if I can do it and benefit from it the way I have, so can you. All the best to you!UPDATE- July 28, 2019: I still use this CD and do the lying down yoga and the full body scan on a regular basis. You strengthen your core and relax with the yoga, and I have been able to bring down my blood pressure and to really relax with the full-body scan. The deal is to do it often and on a regular basis.

    Guided Mindfulness Meditation
    I bought Guided Mindfulness Meditation CDs when I was diagnosed with Stage 3B Inflammatory Breast cancer. I was stressed. After 2 years, I am still using them. I really like JKZ’s philosophy. I am a Christian and praying nonstop kept me rehashing everything I was going through. JKZ shows you how just to clear your mind and live in the moment and it isn’t anti-religious but his method allows you to accept whatever it is you are dealing with. I like his slogan “As long as I am breathing, there is more right with me than wrong with me.” Living in the moment is such a powerful thing to accomplish and JKZ shows you how. It isn’t about his voice or music but about you learning to accept whatever you are dealing with here and now.I gave my 85 year old mother both of the yoga CDs and it has also been very helpful to her. After my bilateral mastectomy the yoga CDs helped me get back in shape. Before cancer, I had no reason for an IPod or MP3 player but now I can’t live without them.JKZ’s The Mindfulness for Beginners CDs has a very good explanation of JKZ’s philosophy. Also a shorter version of the Body Scan which is easier to get through than the 45 minute version which is on Guided Mindfulness Meditation.I don’t sit down and do 30 minutes of guided meditation like is suggested but I take mini meditation breaks throughout the day. It is the best thing I have found to reduce stress and I am doing great now and I feel I can handle just about anything.

    Great Deal and Good for You Too
    Guided Mindfulness Meditation by John Kabat-Zinn is well worth the paltry sum they charge for it, and it’s good for you too! It is four CD’s, with two of guided mindfulness, and two of yoga exercises, one to be done while lying down and one for standing. This is part of a get-well series from a well known stress reduction clinic. The two meditations are 45 minutes long each, and one is a full, complete, body scan, and the other is a breating exercise of the same duration. These are great CD’s for the beginner who needs the help of an instructor to guide him/her through the meditations. Once you’ve listened to them a few times, it becomes easy to just turn on your timer and perform them on your own from memory. I’ve used the on-your-back yoga CD several times and it’s a good stretch for people of all flexibility levels. I haven’t used the standing yoga CD yet, though, but if it’s as good as the rest, it’s well worth it. I read one review that said this series was worth the money for the body scan alone. I’d second that sentiment. This is a fantastic deal, and if you care about stress reduction, you should really check this out.

    Have used the body scan meditation on the first CD on a daily basis for a year now with stunning effects. The body scan puts one into a deep state of relaxation by focusing awareness and the breath on each body part. This is effectively equivalent to ‘yoga nidra’ in the yoga tradition. Jon Kabat-Zinn’s aim is to bring the practice of mindfulness into everyday life. Regular use of the body scan meditation means that the body becomes more used to the prompts and can take you into relaxation much quicker. Very helpful as a tool to ease transition from the work day into home/personal life. The second meditation ends with two beautiful poems to reflect upon.The yoga sequences are also very good, easy to follow and having two sessions means you can vary/alternate the practice.Practical and down-to-earth package giving the listener the experience of stillness and self-compassion that empowers one to begin to live life in a greater state of mindfulness about oneself and others. It also trains the listener to learn to live in the present moment accepting things as they actually are and getting to know oneself as one is. One CD package that won’t be gathering dust on the shelves.

    I had to laugh at the various coments on these CD’s. People falling asleep, or simply not getting it.There should be a disclaimer however. The CD’s are meant to be used in conjunction with the book “Full Catastrophe Living” by the same author. Without the book, which outlines a plan on how to use the CD’s, the CD’s would be all but useless.One fellow comlained about Zin mentioning an itch they might feel. The point isn’t the itch, cramp, or random thought, it’s about how to deal with those things during the meditation process. You are training your brain to be “in the moment” and aware of your inner dialogue so that you can better handle the situations you find yourself in without reacting blindly.

    KNowing Jon’s previous writings, and having tried his methods i decided to buy this CD set. totally great. I recommend it for anyone wanting self-satisfaction, in finding personal and social answers, and learning how to live a better internal life, which will lead to a better external life. Highly recommended. A great author in that he has practiced, learned and taught this information for many, many years. A proved story-line which i recommend for self-help people to use, learn, and apply within their lives. Then, everyone wins.

    I am regularly using these CD’s and find them very efficacious. I came to them through reading most (600pp) of ‘Full Catastrophe Living’ by Jon Kabat Zinn. The book and Tapes are based on the 8week course of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction which has apparently proved to be successful in the USA. They go so much deeper that the book and CD on ‘Mindfulness’ by Mark Williams which I had previously read. The whole thing is about practising Mindfulness. I believe the benefits are endless and fully recommend the book and CD’s. I would not bother too much about the negative comment of the breathiness of Jon’s voice. Once you get going this does not seem to matter and after all during the Yoga CD you can tell that he is going through the moves himself to correctly pace the practice. Unreservedly recommend.
